In The Loop ~ (UK, 2009) ~ DVD

Some political situations call for probing analysis, dramatization with a message. But after we’ve gotten the message and thought about it for a few days, the message seems to fade. Bring on the next message for processing. Then there are those situations that really should be subjected to satire. And the British seem to excel in this arena – satire that is smart, jaw-droppingly funny, apt and frighteningly acerbic. Satire of this type gives the subject exactly what it deserves. And I think this sort of treatment stays with us longer – may even have a few memorable lines stay with us that we can pull out when the politicians get to preachy and stop listening. This assumes, of course, that they listen in the first place. But let’s give them the benefit of the doubt for a moment…

The British political satire, In The Loop, gives politicians of all stripes a blistering whoopin’ (well deserved).  The story line has parallels to the Bush manipulation of the ‘facts’ regarding the run up to shock and awe. Worth a rental if only to get your Master’s in swearing. Scottish actor Peter Capaldi is a high-wire act of profanity. And if you’re not too shocked at the sentiments he spouts, then you’ll be in awe of his ability to string together words that would cut a redwood down to size. Great fun and a scathing indictment on the way most governments probably work. The extremely versatile James Gandolfini also appears as a pacifist Lt. General.

  1. Great film! You should try and find the BBC TV show it was based on called ‘The Thick of It’. Got a few of the same characters in it including Tucker (Capaldi). It’s pretty similar but set in one of the cabinet offices of the British Governement. I was really impressed that they managed to keep the intensity of the 30minute tv episodes for an entire film.

  2. Thanks. I was directed to this film by a comment on my post re “The Trip”. That blogger also mentioned “The Thick of It”,
