My buddy in high school (’57 Chevy) was a regular on the Tamiami Trail illegal drag races back in the day. As a former Floridian, I had been to a couple Daytona’s back in the late fifties/early sixties. I got to thinking about this the other day when a young good ole boy from Tennessee (who led his team ‘in prayer’ before the race) won the 500.
Some say that moonshine runners were the genesis of Nascar racing. Others deny it. Some believe the earth is flat. Junior Johnson is the most famous shine runner (now a purveyor of pork rinds) to become a Nascar hero. Tennessee even has a “White Lightning Trail” tour.
To make this years Daytona experience better, this was posted on the Daytona web-site:
To help make the race day experience more enjoyable, fans may now carry in soft-sided coolers that measure 14 x 14 x 14 inches or 2,700 cubic inches – six times the size previously permitted!
