2011 Oscar Nominations

Not many surprises here, coming after the Golden Globes. Hopefully there’ll be a few twists when the actual Oscar awards are announced. Watch for The King’s Speech to switch up with The Social Network. Though I think the GG’s got it right. Personally, I like The Fighter and Winter’s Bone better. And where the f is Animal Kingdom? Or even Blue Valentine?

Best Picture:
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The King’s Speech
127 Hours
The Social Network
True Grit
Winter’s Bone

As much as I love the Coen Brothers, they seem to be in a rut. Oh, not in the sense of pushing out formulaic films. It’s just that their creativity seems to have gone on vacation.  Fincher or O’Russell.

Directing:
Darren Aronfsky (Black Swan)
David O’Russell (The Fighter)
Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech)
David Fincher (The Social Network)
Joel and Ethan Coen (True Grit)

Really looking forward to Bardem’s film, which opens here this weekend. I’Ll be there. I got shout out at last year’s TIFF. I’ll go with Bardem, sight unseen, but Firth will probably roll on.

Actor in a Leading Role
Javier Bardem (Biutiful)
Jeff Bridges  (True Grit)
Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network)
Colin Firth (The King’s Speech)
James Franco (127 Hours)

Michelle Williams and Jennifer Lawrence don’t have a prayer. And interestingly, Annette Bening was in a different category at the GG’s. Still, Portman again.

Actress in a Leading Role
Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right)
Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole)
Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone)
Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine)

Yeah, I just don’t see how Christian Bale can lose.
Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale (The Fighter)
John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone)
Jeremy Renner (The Town)
Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right)
Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech)

I like this one. Amy Adams up against Melissa Leo again. Amy, Amy, Amy! Weaver may sneak in here though. It was a great performance.

Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams (The Fighter)
Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech)
Melissa Leo (The Fighter)
Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit)
Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom)

Again…..sight unseen: Biutiful. I did see Outside The Law at TIFF. Very good.

Foreign Language Film
Biutful (Mexico)

In a Better World (Denmark)
Incendies (Canada)
Outside the Law (Algeria)

I’ll report back on Biutiful this weekend.
