Alice in Wonderland ~ (USA, 2010) ~ Cable

Tim Burton’s Alice is typically Burton, with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as a killer Red Queen. She really got into it. Big head and all. This is a rewrite of sorts of Carroll’s two Alice books. Here, Alice is 19 and about to get married off to a blue blood with cash and titles. She’ll have none of it and heads for the hole to Underland. The caterpillar was a disappointment, the tea partiers were ho-hum and even Johnny Depp really brought nothing to the table, though Mia Wasikowska was an adequate Alice. The White Queen was goofy, and the monsters were decidedly second rate.

As a big Bonham-Carter fan, she cracked me up, what with her squealing pig ottoman and her answer for everything: Off with her head. But this is probably not a film for Alice worshipers, who may well be offended. I’m not in that category, and I wasn’t offended, just a little bored with it all.

Enough with the Alice’s already – there’s well over a dozen and counting…
