Whip It ~ (USA, 2009) ~ Cable

Whip It came as a bit of a surprise, as I thought it was a Drew Barrymore vehicle (but it is her film: she directs), and she plays only a minor on screen role when compared to many of the other actors. With a great soundtrack (including my discovery of a singer-songwriter named Lorene – great stuff), it was enjoyable, if formulaic and corny. Ellen Page plays Babe Ruthless, a member of the Austin Texas Roller Derby team, The Hurl Scouts. You get the picture. This is a real league, and try-outs are in a couple of weeks, so lace ’em up!

It’s uneven and there are some scenes that do not work at all, or are just gratuitous, but there’s fun to be had along the way.
