Abbey Lincoln

Abbey Lincoln has died. Ms. Lincoln was a pop-jazz singer, but I mostly remember her from one great movie: the iconic and groundbreaking film, Nothing But A Man. Lincoln and Ivan Dixon turned in perfect performances in this black and white classic. But what I remember the movie most for was the soundtrack, which really introduced me to Martha & The Vandellas (“Heatwave”) and  Little Stevie Wonder – remember when he was “little”? – (“Fingertips”).  The Miracles, The Marvelettes and Mary Wells also had their music in the smoky soundtrack.

Abbey Lincoln can be proud for having taken part and left this work behind.

RIP – Abbey Lincoln, 80, was a jazz singer named Gaby Lee who took a new name – a cross between Westminster Abbey & Abraham Lincoln to get a new start. She was a Hollywood princess until she embraced civil rights & found her heart. http://urdead2me.wordpress.com/2010/08/14/rip-abbey-lincoln/
