JULY 4th – Jack Johnson

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Fight of the Century. On July 4th, 1910, Jack Johnson beat the Great White Hope, Jim Jeffries. The victory ignited race riots all over the country. The win solidified his legend and made him a hero to black men everywhere. It’s hard to imagine the mindset of race relations 100 years ago. So much subtext. Johnson was ahead of his time, and by all accounts a magnificent boxer.
