Most Sincerely Dead

There were 124 Munchkins (not the Dunkin’ Donuts treats) in The Wizard of Oz, but only nine with speaking parts. Meinhardt Raabe, the Coroner who pronounced – very officially – that the Wicked Witch of the West was dead, has himself died at 94.

Raabe led quite an interesting life, touring the country for 30 years as “Little Oscar” with the Oscar Meyer WeinerMobile. At the Chicago World’s Fair of 1934, Raabe was a member of the Midget City cast.

He would be forever known for pronouncing these immortal lines:

“As coroner I must aver, I thoroughly examined her, and she’s not only merely dead, she’s really most sincerely dead.”
