I read the book, but it was a few years ago. I don’t remember much about it. My sense is that the movie was not exactly faithful but that it might have been a cut above on my personal pleasure scale. Of course, this could all be wrong.
Does the movie play up the sex angle (not that there’s anything wrong with that that)? Certainly Kate Winslet is steamy in that guarded and weary sort of way. And she’s very good. Undoubtedly the best thing about the movie. Her Oscar was well deserved. Here a thought though. She also won a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actress. I didn’t realize she played two roles.
Ralph Fiennes (for me at least) always treads that thin line between perfectly understated and disappearing. Sometime he folds and spindles himself into his role and disappears. He does that here.
Well, another flawed hyped Oscar movie, but better than several of the others.
