With Tom Cruise’s ridiculous new turn as a German eye-patched plotter (ok, ok, I have not seen it, so this in unfair…I just can’t take him seriously anymore) we’re talkin’ eye-patches! Yarr!
So there’s a short piece in today’s Boston Globe, noting some eye-patch movies villains (and the article notes that mostly they are villains), with few hero types – like Cruise.
The author of the short article lists several, starting with Cruise, and including my fave, pictured here: John Wayne’s in True Grit and Rooster Cogburn, John Heard’s in Cutter’s Way, Kurt Russell’s Snake Pliskin in Escape from New York, Robert Wagner in Austin Powers, and several others.
The website Total Film has an article listing the 5 Most Soulful Eye-Patches In Cinema. Beyond the ones in the Globe article, they additionally include General Chang of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Dennis Hopper in Waterworld rates a mention as well.
My favorite though, has to be Elle (“She must suffer to her last breath“) Driver (Darryl Hannah) in the Kill Bill movies. This one is really evil. Purely so.
