The Big Bada Bing
On September 10th, most of us in the Western Hemisphere will probably be asleep along about 3 AM. What’s happening at that time on the other side of the globe may rock you out of bed. That’s when the boyos at CERN (The European Organisation for Nuclear Research) will unleash beams of protons on a collision course with each other in a little something called the Large Hadron Collider. You probably don’t have one of these in your cellar.
What this little experiment will do – an experiment called Alice – (A Large Ion Collider Experiment: “one pill makes you taller, and one pill makes you small”) will be to replicate the Big Bang at the origins of the Universe. Cool.
Well, but wait. Doesn’t this make you a little uneasy? I mean after all, by definition a Big Bang is pretty….well BIG? And how Big is too big? Guess we’ll find out. Or on the other hand we’ll never know what hit us.
