Big Love in Texas

As unsettling as it is to see the Stepford wives of San Angelo, Texas talking in their sing-song monotone about the children taken from them, it’s even more of a mental jolt when one has the confusing sensation that maybe you’re just watching an episode of HBO’s Big Love gone amok.

In most TV series, you can see scripts being ripped right from the headlines. Fox’s 24 comes to mind. From the news to the working script. Big Love has always seemed to have reversed this little real life-fictional symbiosis. Episodes often seem to have played out in the news after having shown on tv. It’s positively disorienting. The women of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints seem just to have wandered off the set with their sister-wives. I fully expect to see a news microphone being shoved in Wanda’s face, waiting for a comment.

When life imitates art imitating life…well, the results are often worth big headlines or Emmy’s. Between Mitt Romney’s aborted Presidential run and this latest LDS scandal, I can’t help but yearn for the show’s return, just to see what they make of it all. Or should I say, I can’t wait to watch the show again, to see what predictions for the future might be.
