Let’s hang out
This Saturday is National Hanging Out Day. Laundry that is. Like in clothes lines. Many communities, associations – what have you – have banned the “unsightly” clotheslines to keep the environment pleasing to the eye. For those who want to hang out, though, this is extremely short-sighted. The 88 million clothes dryers in America do their ozone damaging bit and there are many who believe we should stand up for our “right to dry”.
OK, let me admit that I can snob with the best of ‘em and at first blush there’s something trailer park about clotheslines. Or 50’s at least. We grew up with a clothesline in the back yard. Course, we also grew up with a black and white tee-vee! But let me step back and think again. Uh…..they’re still ugly. Maybe I’ll come around. I see the point, truly. And there is something about the smell of freshly laundered sheets that have dried outside in a crisp autumn breeze and are layed out cool and crisp on the bed. Remember that smell? Barely, right?
So hang ‘em out this weekend. You’ll be glad you did!
I loved hanging my clothes out in New England. Down here in the deep south’s hot, humid weather they take forever to dry, and there’s no telling what species of bugs will be clinging to the clothes when you take them down.
