The Wind That Shakes The Barley ~ (2006, Ireland) – Cable
2008 January 26
Ken Loach’s 2006 film depicts the Irish struggle between the wars against British rule as played out brother to brother. It’s earnest and heartfelt, and attempts to fairly depict the complexities of the internal struggle. In that ambition lies the films failure. The power of the film collapses under the weight of the attempt to depict the politics – and we’re left with a family tragedy that is hard to embrace on its own. There are other, better films about ‘the struggles’, I’m afraid.
